South Herts Golf Club

Links Drive, Totteridge N20 8QU

The Vardon Course at South Herts, is a splendid Par 72, Open Championship pre-qualifying parkland course, with well placed trees and copses, relatively small and often sloping greens, renowned as some of the best in the south of England. The undulating nature of the land places a premium on intelligent shot placement.

Originally laid out in 1900 by twice Open winner Willie Park Junior, a pioneer of parkland courses and designer of approximately 170 courses worldwide including Sunningdale and The Berkshire, the construction work was carried out by the Club's professional and greenkeeper Tom Winton, who eventually became a course architect in his own right, designing numerous courses in the USA.

In 1902, Harry Vardon became the professional at South Herts, where he remained until his death in 1937. He made many substantial improvements to the course during his 35 years as professional and greenkeeper at the Club, and even consulted James Braid on the bunkering during the 1930's. In the 1990's, the addition of both fairway watering and substantial drainage infrastructure have resulted in a playing surface that ranks with the best. More recently, further improvements under the supervision of architect Ken Moodie, have seen all the bunkers re-built and re-positioned to provide a strong strategic challenge to today’s long hitters, as well as enjoyable golf for club golfers with more modest skills.

The welcoming and well-appointed Clubhouse displays an important collection of golfing memorabilia from Harry Vardon and Dai Rees, who together served as golf professional for 72 years at the Club. Amongst a long list of tournament victories Harry Vardon was the winner of six Open Championships and one US Open. Dai Rees also had a long and successful career as a professional, playing in 9 Ryder Cups, captaining the victorious Great Britain team at Lindrick in 1957. Visitors who are interested in the history of the game will find a few minutes browsing the collection well worth while.
