Designed in 2002 by Howard Swan. Boavista is located just to the West of Lagos, and easily found on the E125 near to the village of Luz.
The course, blessed with stunning views from all sides, with the bay of Lagos to the East and the impressive back drop of the Monchique Mountains to the North, is a stern test for golfers of all standards. At 6053 metres, Par 71 from the championship tees, shot making and good judgement are essential to put together a score on this undulating course where it can be far too easy to be distracted by the views.
In particular the course is defended by its five strong par 3 holes. Without doubt the signature hole, 6th at 194 metres, where it is necessary for the tee shot to carry a cavernous walled ravine to a long, narrow and severely stepped green on which it is all too easy to over club, leaving a treacherous downhill chip or putt, often followed by another chip back up the green! Or perhaps the 14th at 227 metres, where a substantial carry over water to a small well bunkered green with no room for error - a hole to be treated with the utmost respect.
Of course, with all great courses there is a ‘sting in the tail’, the 17th, At only 284 metres this hole is by anyone’s standards a potential card wrecker! The narrow fairway is flanked down the right hand side by an expanse of water, and there is little room for ‘bail out’ to the left with a hillside of heavy rough and palm trees awaiting. Subsequently a tee shot of so small degree of accuracy is mandatory if a further lake in front of the green is to be negotiated by the second shot. Once on the green, indeed there are still difficulties to overcome with subtle slopes and undulations making it difficult to read.
Once the 17th has been negotiated, the 18th at 418 metres is also demanding - uphill all the way to the clubhouse beyond, bushes left and a collection of bunkers to the right, an accurate drive and well struck second shot to a small, well bunkered green will be needed if par is to be achieved here!
Boavista is indeed certainly more than just another resort course and well worthy of a visit.
