Set in the beautiful countryside of the Midlands, Carlow Golf Club is a parkland course laid out in a wild deer park over undulating terrain with numerous elevated tees, several excellent dog legs and large, slick putting surfaces. The course was designed by Tom Simpson, the architect who created the famous Old Course at Ballybunion and the magnificent links at Baltray, and opened in 1922. It is therefore no surprise that in its annual poll of Ireland's Top 30 Golf Courses, the Irish Golf Institute rate Carlow among the country's top three inland courses built before 1990.
There are many fine long par fours and the 16th, which is played through a tunnel-like valley is arguably the most demanding two-shotter of the entire round. The course is invariably in good condition, its qualities further enhanced by the water hazards at the 2nd, 10th and 11th. The par 5 18th offers the chance of a closing birdie and a grandstand finish as it tumbles downhill all the way back to the clubhouse. A great ending to a memorable round.
