Carrickfergus stands on the shoreline of Belfast Lough with great views across to County Down. The club, which was founded in 1926, is a pleasant parkland layout with a good mix of challenging and golfer friendly holes. There are several long holes like the 6th to tempt the big hitters, but beware the infamous dam lurking. This same piece of water has caused some trepidation when driving off at the first hole.
Straight driving and course management are essential at Carrickfergus. With its imaginative use of water and sand the par of 68 is not matched that easily. The current course record stands at 66. Local golf architect David Jones has redesigned several holes with strong emphasis given to subtle greens built to USGA standards and liberal use of water features. The clubhouse has recently been redesigned and redeveloped to a standard which many clubs would aspire to emulate. Carrickfergus is a great place to visit and an even better place to come back to.
