Downfield Golf Club is recognised as one of the finest inland courses in the United Kingdom. It has played host to many events over its long history.
In the past tournaments like the SPGA Masters, the Scottish Boys Strokeplay, PGA Scottish Open, Scottish Amateur and the British Girls Home Internationals have all been held here, but it was the great honour of being a Final Qualifying venue for the Open Championship at Carnoustie in 1999 that has rightly put Downfield near the top of the tree as a golfing destination.
Downfield has already been asked to host the Final Open Qualifying for Carnoustie again in 2007. The original Downfield course was designed by the one and only James Braid but some holes were altered in 1964 to make way for local housing. Many of the original holes are still in play and very few bunkers have been altered.
