The original layout at Knock was designed in the early 1920's by a top firm of English golf architects, Colt, Mackenzie and Allison. Dr Alister Mackenzie went on to design the U.S. Masters course at Augusta whilst Colt used his skills at Royal Portrush. It is therefore no surprise that Knock has developed into one of the finest inland courses in Ireland - the par of 69 is reputed to be one of the toughest in the country. Tree-lined fairways, a proliferation of bunkers and well-manicured greens result in an exceptional golfing challenge.
Golf correspondent Charles Mulqueen describes two feature holes - 'The course gets off to a delightful start with a right hand dogleg which culminates to a deceptively sloping left to right downhill green. Another first nine favourite is the testing 6th, a par 4 of more than 450 yards. This is particularly attractive in Spring when the cherry blossom trees are in full bloom.....the very best of drives will be short of the stream and then follows a slight dogleg left funnelling into a right to left green guarded by bunkers' (Ireland's Top Golf Courses, 1990).
