The Oldest 18 Hole Course in England.
Golf at Royston has been dated back as far as 1624; local historians have claimed that the first English golfer, the 1st Earl of Buckingham played at that time. The origins of the 18 hole golf course at Royston date to when two Cambridge University Students laid out the first course in 1869. To read more on the clubs history follow Click Here.
An 18 hole heathland course with a unique links feel situated near the Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire border. Easily accessible from both London and Cambridge, our heathland links golf course has glorious views over three counties from its spectacular location on Therfield heath. The naturally draining landscape allows members and visitors to enjoy the full golfing experience throughout the year, complemented by a friendly and welcoming club house, bar and a fully stocked pro-shop.
The natural contours of the heathland give every hole its distinct character, while the varying wind conditions add an ever changing and fascinating dimension.
Built on well drained chalk the course remains playable in all but the worst excesses of winter. The greens and fairways, matured over more than a hundred years of care, are the envy of many neighbouring courses.
Whilst not long, the course demands great levels of skill and sound local knowledge. Former U.S. Open Champion Ted Ray fell an easy visit to local celebrity Charles Shepherd, while a youthful Nick Faldo needed all his talents to win the junior championship here.
Restrictions: Play Mon-Fri at any time. Play Sat and Sun after 11.30am, all tee times are subject to availability. Offer is based on 1-8 golfers and Open Fairways members can play this course five times per annum.
