Early in 1891 the professional at Lytham St. Annes Golf Club, George Lowe, travelled to the Lake District to look at a site for a new golf course. He liked what he saw - 200 acres of heather, bracken, trees, rocks and hillocks in an area known as Cleabarrow Fell, one mile east of Bowness on Windermere. A nine hole course was built and eighteen months later it was extended to eighteen holes. Over the years this scenic, unique course has proved to be a popular venue. It is a most interesting course which requires thought rather than a hit and hope attitude. A friendly welcome awaits all who venture to this part of the Lake District and for those who wish to stay in the vicinity, there are opportunities to visit numerous areas of exquisite beauty.
