Buchanan Castle Golf Club

Drymen, Stirlingshire G63 0HY

Situated on a ridge in Buchanan Castle Estate stands the ruins of a baronial castle. Below the ridge lies a flat plain, sliced through by the wandering oxbows of the Endrick Water. To the east and south is the great slab of the Campsie Hills. To the west and north west, there is the beginning of the Highlands and the magical mountains of Arthur, Vane, Vorlich, Lui and Ben Lomond itself.

Amidst this scenic splendour is one of the least known gems of Scottish golf, Buchanan Castle Golf Club. The course, designed by James Braid, lies on the plain of the Endrick, less than a mile from Loch Lomond and it is a delight, in spite of the fact that in Scottish golfing terms it is a relative newcomer dating from 1936. The clubhouse was built on the site of the ancient Buchanan House, home of the Buchanan family which had held lands on Loch Lomondside since the 13th century.
