Hickleton originated in 1909 as a nine hole course, and was upgraded to 18 holes in 1976 by the design of Huggett & Coles. The 18 holes are a challenging test of golf on an undulating parkland course and the terrain sets up some memorable shots. The 14th for example requires a tee shot down into a valley with lateral water hazards protecting both sides. This leaves a tough second shot uphill to the green. Another tester is the par three 17th. Here a very undulating green is the reward for finding the target on this 183 yard uphill hole. The quality of the course is matched by the excellent clubhouse and restaurant facilities.
