A founder member of the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1891, Portsalon affords an absolutely stunning location. It is situated on the north west shore of Lough Swilly, overlooking the magnificent Ballymastocker Bay (voted the 2nd best beach in the world by the Observer newspaper). With typical linksland turf and well-contoured greens there are many excellent holes. The re-design of several of these was completed in 2002 under the careful eye of Pat Ruddy and the course now extends to a championship length of 6472 metres off the back stakes.
For the visitor these improvements remove some of the quirks inherent in the old course without changing the enjoyment or nostalgia of playing an original links design steeped in history. Portsalon is without doubt a classic 'hidden gem' in a truly breathtaking location.
