A BEAUTIFUL PARKLAND COURSE

Set on undulating parkland the 18 hole, 6309 yard course with a par of 71, takes full advantage of all its natural features. With well-guarded greens and excellent mature trees that line the fairways the course holds a challenge for all levels of golfer.

This course belies the myth that Essex is flat. First opened for play in 1925, the following description by G A Philpot and published in 1937 still stands the test of time: "laid out by Messrs Hawtree and Taylor, who are to be congratulated on the excellent design and layout of the holes. They had their task made easier by reason of the natural terrain upon which the course lies. It is ground pre ordained by nature to be converted into a golf course, for it is one wide expanse of generous undulations, but at the same time very compact with virtually every one of the 99 acres incorporated into the course.

There is not a hole that does not present a problem of its own; and from every vantage point some new vista awaits the golfer to act as a further incentive to good golf or as a solace to bad". Chigwell is a fine test of golf and has stood the test of time.
