Forfar Golf Club in Angus, Scotland has updated their club's profile
31 December 2022
Forfar Golf Club is looking forward to welcoming our members throughout 2023.
Forfar Golf Club was founded in 1871 and is a wooded heathland course located only 12 miles from the 2007 Open Championship venue of Carnoustie.
This club has the 4th oldest 18 hole course in the world and is the very first Club to have an 18 hole course from inception and inauguration. The original course was laid out by four time Open Champion Old Tom Morris of St Andrews in 1871 with alterations being made in 1926 by James Braid. In 1871, Founding member James Brodie invited Tom Morris Snr to Forfar where he laid out an 18-hole golf course. This was the very first 18-hole course built from inception anywhere in the world. Tom Morris Snr was bestowed as an Honorary Member of the Forfar Golf Club and visited many times to play on the course that he designed based on the template of the 18 hole layout of the Old Course.
The course underwent a redesign in 1926 by James Braid, however, 13 of the original 1871 greens and holes are in the same if not very similar locations today. One of the most difficult holes is undoubtedly the 12th, a 444 yard par 4, but the 412 yard 15th is suitably named "Braids Best" after the five time Open Champion. Although this is an inland course the tight undulating heathland fairways combined with a classical layout creates conditions similar to links golf.
This compact golf course is in the heart of picturesque Angus and provides the ideal test for all abilities of golfer and will provide an enjoyable and memorable day for any one wishing to play golf in Scotland.
