What a great way to start the week with golf at Theydon Bois Golf Club in Essex, England
18 February 2019
A friendly, modern club in a historical setting
Theydon Bois is one of the oldest golf clubs in Essex, right in the heart of Epping Forest. Founded in 1897 and designed in part by the renowned James Braid, at Theydon you’ll find a traditional forest course which is a delight to play throughout the changing seasons of the year.
The original course was designed in 1897 by James Braid, five times a winner of the Open. Apart from being a golfing legend Braid was a golf course designer of great distinction. His most notable achievements being the designs of the championship courses Gleneagles and Carnoustie.
The course is truly unique, with 9 of the fairways being narrowly sculptured out of the ancient forest, pleasantly contrasting with 9 wider and winding fairways. Subtly borrowed greens are guarded by strategically placed bunkers, all of which make this par 68 course a real challenge for all standards of player.
Since Braid's time, Theydon Bois Golf Course has undergone many changes in order to deliver the standards and facilities required by members of a modern golf club.
However, the essential character of the course has not changed and the joy of playing golf in a traditional English forest in the rolling countryside of Essex prevails.
